Mr. Aba-Onu is Senior Associate General Counsel for Optum. As Senior Counsel, Mr. Aba-Onu primarily collaborates with Optum’s Human Resources and business leaders as a subject matter specialist to assist with compliance, litigation concerns, related rules and regulations, and assuring a transparent and fair work-place environment.

Prior to joining Optum, Mr. Aba-Onu served as Legal Counsel for Prime Therapeutics. Prior to that, he was a Shareholder at Bassford Remele PA, a civil litigation firm in Minneapolis, Minnesota and previously served as an Assistant Attorney General, collaborating with both the Minnesota Departments of Human Services and Public Safety.

Mr. Aba-Onu graduated cum laude from the University of St. Thomas School of Law, where he currently serves as an Adjunct Professor teaching employment law. He formerly served as an adjunct professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law and Hamline University.

Mr. Aba-Onu currently serves as the Immediate Past President of the Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers, previously serving as the President, Vice-President, and Treasurer. Mr. Aba-Onu also serves on the Executive Committee of the Federal Bar Association, Minnesota Chapter as Director and previously as Co-Chair for the Diversity Committee. In addition to these roles, Mr. Aba-Onu previously served as an appointed member to the Committee for Equality and Justice (formed in 2010 to work collaboratively across the Judicial Branch to advance efforts to eliminate bias from court operations, promote equal access to the court, and inspire a high level of trust and public confidence in the Minnesota Judicial Branch) and Co-Chair of the Minnesota Coalition of Bar Associations of Color. Mr. Aba-Onu is also a current Board Member of The Ward 8 Community Benevolence Fund, which provides grants that support Black- and minority-owned businesses and organizations in the Minneapolis neighborhood where George Floyd was murdered.
