Of the more than 2,400 elected district prosecutors in the US, 95% are white, according to the Reflective Democracy Campaign. That may be a considerable factor in the slow progress being made on mass incarceration, according to an article at Salon. While local laws are starting to catch up in some areas, the overwhelmingly white and mostly conservative prosecutors are upholding regressive and outdated laws in their "tough on crime" and "lock-em-up" attitudes. But 2018 could be the year that massive tide starts to turn. Only one percent of prosecutors are women of color, although more women than ever are expected to run for office this year.
