The
City of Ventura is searching for a well-rounded legal professional to serve as
its City Attorney. Appointed by the City Council, the City Attorney is the chief
legal advisor to the City Council, City Manager, all City departments, and all appointed
boards and commissions. In addition, the City Attorney litigates both civil and
criminal cases on the City’s behalf. The City Attorney leads a total staff of eight
including five attorneys (two Senior Assistant City Attorneys, three Assistant City
Attorneys, one paralegal, and two administrative support staff). The City Attorney will bring a dynamic mix
of analytical and pro-active legal skills, effective interpersonal communications,
and a solid background in the broad spectrum of municipal affairs. The ideal candidate will be astute at dealing with a multitude of regulatory
compliance issues, inter-governmental agencies such as the Coastal Commission as
well as other competing interests that may arise through city operations. Experience
in handling water-related issues is highly desirable.
This
position requires a Juris Doctorate degree and 7 years of increasingly responsible
experience as a practicing attorney in the State of California (member of California
Bar), three years of which must immediately precede appointment, including two years
of supervisory experience. Top contenders for this position will have experience
gained by working directly for a California municipality.
