Job Description

The General Counsel for the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) reports to the President of CSN and the Chief General Counsel of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) and serves as a member of the President's executive leadership team. The incumbent will be responsible for the overall management of all legal affairs involving CSN. These responsibilities include providing daily advice to the President, Vice Presidents, Human Resources, and other CSN administrators and departments on policies, and a variety of legal areas, including employment law, contract law, tort law, constitutional law, civil rights law, real estate law, sports law, and compliance with all state and federal regulations and laws governing employers and a higher education institution.

The General Counsel is responsible for representing CSN in various administrative, state, and federal courts, and must be familiar with civil litigation practice and procedures. The General Counsel is also responsible for providing analysis and guidance on Nevada's Public Records Act, Nevada's Open Meeting Law; and, the Board of Regent's Handbook, NSHE Code and Procedures and Guidelines Manual, and the Nevada Administrative Code. They will be expected to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and CSN administration in achieving CSN's institutional goals and objectives in developing an exceptionally qualified, diverse, and enriched workforce who diligently support the Students First mission.

The General Counsel is expected to foster an environment of collegiality, mutual respect, openness, approachability, and collaboration in the administration and operations of CSN, and to also work with the employee groups, NSHE System Administration, and the General Counsels and administrators of other NSHE institutions. This individual will additionally supervise the Assistant General Counsel and Legal Research and Administrative Support Staff.

Required Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, a license to practice law in the state of Nevada and 10 years of related professional experience that includes 7 years of legal experience, 2-3 years of supervisory experience and experience with collective bargaining negotiation and agreements.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including approachability, openness, active listening skills, collaboration skills, and negotiation skills.
• Ability to and desire to work with a diverse group of employees, students, and community constituents.
• Personal and professional integrity and the ability to adhere to best practices of professional responsibility, intellectual aptitude, communication skills, and relationship building.
• Ability to interact constructively with all levels of management and staff.
• Ability to function as advocate, representative, counselor, facilitator of dispute resolution, and investigator.
• Ability to complete multiple projects in a timely manner.
• Ability to write persuasively in legal style, present cases with oral argument before boards and tribunals, and maintain litigation planning skills.

Administrative Faculty Grade E

$135,000 - $155,000 annually
