General Purpose

An image without descriptionUnder the sole direction of the City Council, the City Attorney serves as the chief legal advisor to the City, including the City Council, City Boards and Commissions, City Manager, and City staff relating to all of their official duties. The City Attorney will attend City Council meetings and will be responsible for providing legal advice to the City, reviewing or preparing ordinances, resolutions, bonds, contracts, policies, and other written instruments, prosecuting ordinance violations, and representing the City in court and administrative matters. Following the close date, Human Resources will begin the screening of all applications to identify eligible applicants, based on the city’s established criteria published in the position announcement. The city may invite candidates for onsite or virtual interviews after a complete review of references, background, and academic verifications with the applicant’s authorization.

 The target hiring range will be $184k - $215k ($88.4615/hr - $103.3653/hr).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepares or reviews contracts, ordinances, bonds, resolutions, policies, and other legal documents
  • Represents the City at various court or administrative hearings and proceedings 
  • Retains and supervises outside counsel
  • Attends City Council, Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, Board of Building Adjustment, and licensing authority meetings and other City meetings as required to provide legal advice to the City and perform other duties as required by the City Charter, ordinances, and policies
  • Presents cases on behalf of the City in municipal court and administrative hearings 
Supervisory Duties
  • Documents performance highlights and provides regular feedback to employees and prepares timely performance evaluations that clearly define expectations; coaches and mentors staff and identifies training opportunities to maximize performance
Minimum Qualifications

An image without descriptionJuris Doctorate from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado. At least five years of experience as a practicing attorney is required; municipal experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
