DEPUTY COMMONWEALTH ATTORNEY
The
mission of the Loudoun County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office is to pursue truth
and justice by employing the highest ethical standards in preventing crime,
protecting the innocent and prosecuting the guilty.
The
Office is also dedicated to ongoing training and skill development, as well as
fostering the development of new technologies to fight crime and achieve
justice. Specialized prosecutions exist for areas of great concern to the
County including drugs, gangs, vulnerable victims, and white collar crime. In
addition, our office leads and participates in specialty courts such as Drug
Court and Mental Health Treatment Court. We will collaborate with community
stakeholders towards establishing DUI Court, Restorative Justice Court, and
Veterans' Treatment Court to improve the success rate of rehabilitation for
criminal defendants in addition to reducing crime.
Typical Responsibilities:
Plans,
organizes, directs, assigns and evaluates the work of attorneys engaged in
prosecuting criminal cases in the General and Circuit Courts; assigns and
rotates staff to assure that the difficulty and complexity of cases match the
skill level of assigned attorney; sets objectives and performance standards;
assures that staff is trained; prosecutes the most complex and sensitive cases;
presents cases to the Grand Jury; coordinates prosecutions with the courts, law
enforcement agencies, County Probation Department, and Attorney General's
Office; sets and implements policies and procedures for staff and law
enforcement agencies; in complex cases approves recommendations of subordinate
staff of when to prosecute, compromise, dismiss or retry; represents the Office
of the Commonwealth Attorney at meetings and conferences as assigned; acts as a
resource and internal consultant to staff, other County departments and local
law enforcement agencies; prepares correspondence and reports; attends and/or
conducts meetings and conferences; uses tact and discretion to establish and
maintain effective relationships with other judicial agencies, victims, witnesses,
law enforcement officers and public at large; and, accurately maintain files,
adequately documenting in writing all actions, providing sufficient
justification to support recommendations.
The
Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney serves under the direction and at the pleasure
of the Commonwealth’s Attorney. As a Deputy, he/she reports to the Chief Deputy
Commonwealth’s Attorney and is expected to perform duties as assigned; to
assist the Commonwealth Attorney to develop long range plans and set policies
and procedures to plan, organize, manage and direct the operation of the
Commonwealth Attorney's Office; to serve as a senior member of the management
team; to prosecute the most complex or sensitive cases; to manage and supervise
all attorneys and administrative members of the team; and, to perform other
duties as directed by the Commonwealth Attorney or her Chief Deputy.
Requires a
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from and accredited law school and a license to
practice in Virginia; four (4) years of experience as a licensed practicing
attorney preferably in criminal law / prosecution and/or defense. Applicants
must be members in good standing with the Virginia State Bar. Extensive jury
trial experience preferred. Executive level management experience also
preferred.
The successful
candidate will undergo a criminal background check, which includes a conviction
history. The appointee serves at the pleasure of the Commonwealth Attorney.
