Summary
Under the
direction and supervision of the Deputy General Counsel, the Senior Legal
Specialist/Counsel provides legal advice and support to help Save the Children
US and its affiliates achieve their aims and objectives while complying with
applicable laws, regulations and standards and at an acceptable level of legal
risk. Within the Legal and Risk Management Division, you would provide
generalist legal counsel with day-to-day responsibility for advising designated
departments and affiliates of Save the Children, for guiding and continuously
improving designated compliance functions, and for handling new legal matters
as they arise in a non-profit, mission driven, team environment..
What
You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
·
For assigned internal clients,
draft, review, negotiate and approve a variety of legal agreements; respond to
legal inquiries; oversee responses to compliance matters; provide legal review
of external communications and materials for publication; create agreement
templates; draft or review policies; and monitor developments in the relevant
legal or regulatory framework. (50%)
·
Oversee agency
confidential/anonymous whistleblowing mechanisms on behalf of the Legal and
Risk Management Division, ensuring timely triage, referral, documentation and
follow-up of reported matters, per agency and departmental procedures. (20%)
·
Develop or assist in the
development and delivery of legal and compliance policies, procedures,
processes, and training materials. (15%)
·
Monitor legal industry and
tax-exempt organization legal developments which are or may be applicable to
Save the Children’s legal risk and regulatory obligations and share information
and developments with appropriate staff and colleagues; Oversee and manage
relationships with outside counsel, consultants and volunteers; and Perform
other duties as directed by the Deputy General Counsel and General Counsel (15%)
Required Qualifications
·
Applicants must be a graduate of
an accredited law school with an LL.B. or J.D. and a current member of a bar
with a valid license to practice law in a state, territory of the United
States, District of Columbia, or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
·
A minimum of 2 years of experience
practicing law at a law firm, government agency, or in-house legal department,
including substantive experience with at least one of the following legal areas:
US government regulations concerning grants and contracts; US government laws
and regulations for tax exempt organizations, state and federal lobbying and
campaign finance laws; or corporate compliance programs.

Demonstrated ability to
independently identify legal issues and exposures and develop and articulate
appropriate legal solutions
·
Proven research and negotiating
skills,
·
Professional proficient written
and oral communication skills in English.
·
Demonstrated proficiency with
Microsoft Office applications.
·
Proven ability to work with a
variety of individuals in cross-cultural situations.
Preferred Qualifications
·
International
work or volunteer experience related to humanitarian or development assistance.
·
in-house
legal experience at a nonprofit organization.
·
Experience
documenting and reporting on compliance matters, including experience with
compliance or case management software.
·
Experience
developing and delivering training on-line and in-person training programs.
