The University of Missouri System, located in Columbia, Missouri, is seeking qualified applicants for an attorney in the Office of the General Counsel, emphasizing contracting and regulatory compliance. The University of Missouri System consists of four academic universities located in Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla, and St. Louis, and University of Missouri Health Care. The UM System has more than 75,000 students and 24,000 employees. The University of Missouri Columbia is a public land grant research university and a member of the Association of American Universities.  The Office of the General Counsel provides legal services to all the universities, the health system, and the university system offices. This position reports directly to the General Counsel and will require officing, or a frequent presence, in Columbia, Missouri, with appropriate telework arrangements possible.

The successful candidate must be able to work independently on a wide range of complex and novel issues, with a
particular focus on contracting and regulatory compliance. The role ultimately will be tailored to the unique qualifications and experiences of the selected candidate as those talents relate to client needs and other OGC team members’ areas of expertise and workloads. The ideal candidate will have experience with one or more of the following substantive areas:

  • Drafting and negotiating contracts, governmental and municipal law, government contracting, higher education law, and regulatory matters;
  • Significant experience with federal and state regulatory compliance and general business law and counseling;
  • Proven success in helping a client identify and modify business processes for efficient implementation of contractual and regulatory requirements;
  • Experience with providing advice on mitigating risks of contract litigation;
  • Research compliance and contracting including grants and sponsored research, clinical trials, Institutional Review Board activities, conflicts of interest, and research integrity.

To perform this job successfully, individuals should have demonstrated skill, knowledge, and experience in administrative and contract law; ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization and external contacts; demonstrated skills in client service, oral and written communication, and time management; and proven ability to effectively develop trust, respect and cooperation across all areas of an organization and staff levels. Other responsibilities may include service on University committees; policy development and review; and creating and delivering training programs. The attorney should be enthusiastic about taking a client-centered, business-oriented, collegial approach to representing a land grant public research institution. Individuals should be prepared to promote a culture of ethics, integrity, and compliance.
